Session 2 - Into the Wild was the theme for the week, but dominantly the week was about making new friends, cooking together over the campfire, doing dishes at the Hive, going on hikes, trying out Archery, doing some crafts, color guard, daily snowcones, swimming, singing songs, getting "Clean Camp" (and the sweet treat that goes with that), secret buddies, lanyards, friendship bracelets, making swaps and of course, the wonderful older helpers - the Elves!! It was a great week. The first two days were absolute scorchers, and I'm very grateful that it did not continue all week. Her unit's color was hot pink, and her unit leaders, Mama Bear, Rainbow (who are sisters!), and Leonardo. Many fun memories.
Try-It! Explorations & Adventures
We're a small family of three that likes to have fun. I come from a very strong scouting background, and had a lot of fun through scouting myself growing up. I love the flexibility of activities girls can do either with their troops, augment/expand on classroom activities, explore on their own, or with their family. My daughter is now a third grade Brownie and is spreading her wings.

Maker Faire - Engineering in Action
One of the dad's in our troop alerted us to a fun event held over on the SF Peninsula called the 'Maker Faire' ( http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2011/ ). He had gone the previous year and found that it was inspiring for all the massive and chaotic varieties of inventions that are exhibited. It proved to be quite the experience --there were inventions of every kind. It could be described as a confluence of the mad scientist, nerdy dweeb culture mixed with a kind of renaissance faire ilk. There were homemade vehicles of many kinds - some looking like bugs, flame throwing dragons, even some that looked like cup cakes; a solar powered horse carousel, a steam engine powered organ, bicycle powered rock band, a water-fall made of recycled goods powered by a sea-saw, a water 'black hole', and the list goes on and on. Quite inspiring and it definitely sparks the creative brain cells. One didn't have to be a licensed engineer to enjoy the applications of science, math, technology that these 'makers' used to turn their ideas into reality!

Brownie Play Day at Twin Canyons
On Tuesday after school, the two second grade troops from school joined a few others to participate in Brownie play day. Its an annual event organized by long term volunteer Ann Watrous. It’s a fun day that nearly replicates a day at camp, minus the sleep over. The event starts with some Girl Scout songs, the bridge of silence (created by the older Elves who are there to assist in running the event), the flag ceremony and then tons of games. The girls gont to participate in starting a campfire up at the unit’s campsite used to prepare dinner,. After the required traditional dessert of S’mores, the Elves organized the girls for skits to be done as a troop at the end of the evening between campfire songs led by Ann Watrous. Our troop's skit had the girls lined up, taking turns tasting something imaginary and relating how awful it tasted, the last one saying, "This tastes like its been eaten before! I think all of the participants had a good time!
